A Canadian politician recently got all tied up to break the world record for wearing the most neck ties at once. What kind of a politician would do such a thing? Well, the kind that is retiring – she recently announced that she will not seek re-election next year to the National Assembly of Quebec, and therefore no longer needs to worry about getting votes.
A new way to bundle up for those cold Canadian winters. (guinnessworldrecords/Instagram)
The previous world record – yes, that’s right, there was a previous record for most simultaneous neck ties worn – was held by a Brazilian man who wore 330 ties in 2023. It took nearly 50 minutes for that number to be put on the Québécoise pol, who then had another 30 added to set the new record at 360. She said that she was doing the stunt to make a statement that women are equal to men and can do anything men can do – including really dumb things, apparently.
While the hundreds of ties looked rather uncomfortable, they were probably only slightly more unpleasant and restricting to wear than donning just one tie, which is already a bummer. And even though a world record was broken, the stunt didn’t crack the top 500 list of craziest things in the world done by a politician that week.
Wearing that many ties may be impractical, but at least it looks great. (guinnessworldrecords/Instagram)
“This is an impressive feat,” said a woman nearby who was leaning against a wall. “Although I just learned that the ties were pre-knotted, but I guess it’s still pretty cool. You might say that she tied one on… and then tied another one on… and then another… and then another…” The woman was faintly heard to keep saying “and then another,” even when everyone had long since walked away.
The fit-to-be-tied woman had previously announced that she would be leaving her elected position in order to spend more time with her family. It was unclear how the family felt about that decision, especially after the tie-wearing exploit that would be sure to embarrass even the proudest of kin.
The necktie record occurred on “Infoman,” a Canadian television show. “I’m so proud of my nation,” said a Canadian expat. “An event like this not only shines a light on gender equality, but also proves that Canada is just as capable as America of airing inane, ludicrous programming for the masses. This is truly a special time to be from The Great White North.”
