Radar data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter suggests the pit leads into a subsurface cave or lava tube.
• The cave could be a surprisingly useful piece of lunar real estate because it may shield astronauts from radiation, micrometeorites and the Moon’s brutal temperature swings, all the usual drawbacks of trying to live on a giant airless rock.
• Researchers estimate the underground structure extends at least tens of meters, with other analyses describing a cave roughly 45 meters wide and 80 meters long. Scientists think it was probably formed by ancient volcanic activity, when flowing lava eventually cooled and left tunnels behind.
• The discovery could make lunar caves attractive locations for future bases because they provide some of the basic structural protection a habitat would otherwise have to be built from scratch. But astronauts haven't exactly been handed the keys yet: the cave still needs to be mapped and physically explored, and getting in and out could be a considerable engineering headache.

• A customer threw a cheesesteak at Tom Francano, the longtime general manager of Philadelphia’s Pat’s King of Steaks, around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Multiple angles captured the incident on video.
• Francano, who says he has worked at the iconic South Philadelphia restaurant for nearly 50 years, said the customer returned after ordering a cheesesteak with Cheez Whiz and onions and complained that the sandwich was “garbage.”
• According to Francano, the customer threw the sandwich at his face, scattering food and other debris, then fled down the street. He also said the individual arrived with a camera and tripod, leading him to suspect the person could have been an influencer.

✓ Corey Conners appeared headed out of bounds during Saturday's Presidents Cup foursomes match at Medinah when a spectator decided to offer an unconventional assist.

✓ The fan kicked Conners' still-moving ball over the boundary fence and back onto the green, where it eventually stopped just 13 feet from the hole.

✓ Unfortunately for Conners, golf has a rule for this. Because the spectator's action was deliberate, officials estimated where the ball would have finished without the interference — and ruled it out of bounds.

✓ Conners and partner Nick Taylor had to replay the shot under stroke-and-distance and eventually lost the hole.
